One of the best I’ve seen is Al-Jazeera’s interactive visualizations that were produced from the Iraq War logs (http://english.aljazeera.net/secretiraqfiles/2010/10/20101022172059236587.html).

In five minutes you can actually see more than 55,000 IED incidents, their locations, how many people died and who they were. I can’t think of any other way that data could have been presented without just being another war story.

My inspiration when thinking of visualizations has come from http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/ – It’s probably one of the more interesting collections of data presentation on the net.

THE data visualisation that made me take the plunge in data driven journalism was the Guardian’s bubble chart of public spending: http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2010/may/17/uk-public-spending-departments-money-cuts#zoomed-picture

The Guardian Data section is a very good read but I agree that the Al Jazeera visualisation on the Iraq War logs is pretty amazing…
