Hi: I recently started doing some work for a new start-up called Junar.com, which is a tool to help collect and use data. We’re looking to interact with journalists and bloggers to try it out and get some feedback on the product. I actually used to be a Television journalist and my boyfriend is a journalist turned entrepreneur. And I spend a lot…[Read more]

Sounds great! I’ll check it out. What technological innovation are you talking about? Data mining tools like http://www.scraperwiki.com?
-
also, sorry for not answering earlier, I didn’t get the notification :S

Hi Marianne: Thanks for the message. Tools like Scraperwiki or Info Chimps or Socrata (OR Junar) are making it easier for journalists and the general publish to collect and use data. The more tools there are to organize, use, publish the data–the better informed every one will be, as data gives more context to any analysis.

What has drawn me into data journalism are not so much the visualizations but more the stories that can be found in data. A good example for me is a story in the Dutch news paper NRC where they used the Way Back Machine to make an inventory of right-extremist websites and the language they employed over the course of decade.…[Read more]

I totally agree! Information is beautiful is a great inspiration for me too
I interviewed David McCandless and a special feature is coming soon on DJB… THE data visualisation that made me take the plunge in data driven journalism was the Guardian’s bubble chart of public spending:…[Read more] -

One of the best I’ve seen is Al-Jazeera’s interactive visualizations that were produced from the Iraq War logs (http://english.aljazeera.net/secretiraqfiles/2010/10/20101022172059236587.html). In five minutes you can actually see more than 55,000 IED incidents, their locations, how many people died and who they were. I can’t think of any other way…[Read more]

This looks to be a great site. But, I had trouble making the system accept a beautiful image of a sparse matrix. How are we going to do show and tell with our data tables and beautiful graphics if I can’t get a sparse matrix accepted?
There are some absolutely gorgeous images created from sparse matricies and after looking at several of them,…[Read more]
